Green Map Europe has its own HUB.

Barcelona - SPAIN

In Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, hundreds of green sites have been put on the Mapa Verde. It has been distributed broadly with the EcoGuia de Catalunya and can be requested from the Sustainable City Resources Office - 'Oficina de Recursos per a la Ciutat Sostenible' (Nil Fabra 20, E-08012 Barcelona). The website for Barcelona's Green Map is being designed in collaboration with Ecoserveis. Leading the effort is Josep Puig Boix, former Sustainable City Councilor, with the sponsorship of the Barcelona City Council and Imma Mayol, the new Vice-Mayor for Sustainability and Urban Ecology. This map focuses on green businesses, health alternatives, urban mobility, renewable energy, waste and of course, green places! The 2001 edition was created by Joaquim Corominas and Josep Puig, with the support of Catalonia Government, Barcelona Province Government and Barcelona City Council. Plans are now being confirmed to extend this project into a Hub supporting the creation of additional Catalonian projects!

Copenhagen - DENMARK

view of Wonderful Ecopenhagen Map

I
n August 1996, the very first Green Map using the GMS Icons was published in Copenhagen! The wonderful ECOPENHAGEN Map was printed in both Danish and English by Ecooperation, and became a popular resource. Special thanks to Niels Peter Flint, co-founder of O2 Global Network, who initiated this project and guided its first edition.

In June 1999, a brand new edition called the EcoMap was published in both printed and digital formats by a new team headed by "chaos-pilot" Cecilie Hagested. Illuminating the best eco resources of Copenhagen, it is quite different from the first edition, yet maintained very high sustainability standards. The website and project continued to grow, and May 25, 2000, marked the third edition's launch in both formats! Visit EcoMap and tour a rich array of sites, the events calendar and other resources online. Copies of this Green Map as well as a terrific poster can be requested from the website (in Danish or English editions). Until supplies ran out, you could even pick up a copy at the Information Desk at the Copenhagen airport and explore the city's green side from the moment you arrived.

In March 2002 production of another edition of the Eco Map was initiated and in August, the 4th edition became available, on paper and online. It's a sophisticated new look with more in-depth information.

In March 2003 we added the comprehensive criteria developed for the EcoMap to this website for others to learn from, as we think these standards are excellent and readily understood by Green Map users. And the team in Copenhagen, including Cecilie Hagested and Monika Wallgren, hosted the second European Green Mapmakers gathering in the city's new green Environmental Department complex. We always look forward to great outcomes from Ecooperation's endeavors!

Eindhoven - THE NETHERLANDS

Eindhoven, The Netherlands' web based Green Map debuted shortly after World Environment Day 2000. All in Dutch, the interactive Groene Kaart is easy to navigate, thanks to the Green Map Icons. You can explore the city section-by-section. This project is directed by Renate Foks, environmental consultant of Foks, milieu-advies en-educatie. The Eindhoven Green Map is posted at Eindhoven's Digital City, with the input of local groups and businesses initated by Forum 21, which supports Local Agenda 21. Renate also organized the Noord-Brabant Bicycling Green Map project.

Göteborg - SWEDEN

Goteborg is the home of Sweden's well-known environmental information organization, Ekocentrum, with whom mapmaker Einar Hansson produced the first regional Green Map of Goteborg and surroundings using Green Map Icons in 2000. 50,000 free copies were published each year. Two new Green Maps charting over 200 sites in Goteborg and the Vastra Gotaland Region were published in 2003, a large folding map in English and a comprehensive 60-page booklet in Swedish.

The Ekocentrum features a comprehensive environmental exhibition, short courses and the Green Map as a way to underline the existence of pioneering projects supporting sustainable development. Ekocentrum uses the Green Map as a powerful tool for study tours and technical visits from many countries, raising public awareness in schools, environmental groups, companies, etc. The project is supported by the environmental secretariat of the Vastra Gotaland Regional Board, the Urban Planning Office and the Environmental Office of the City of Goteborg, Business Region Goteborg and others. Plans for a 2006 edition are underway.

Gouda - THE NETHERLANDS

view of Gouda Greenmap

Gouda, The Netherlands' colorful and interactive Green Map was one of the very first on the web! Although it is no longer online, visitors could explore the green sites while reading informative details about this very eco-conscious town, in Dutch and English. Gouda's Mapmaking team includes Friends of the Earth members. Read the Gouda Green Map Story to find out how Frits v/d Laan and Michelle Thomasson created it in a few weeks during Autumn 1996. A paper version of the Gouda Green Map was published within Gouda's Green Guide in Spring 1999. It may still be available at libraries, organic and second hand shops, and a second printing is being planned.

Liverpool - UNITED KINGDOM

Liverpool, England UK's broad-based Green Map was published on March 31, 1999. It was the first from the UK and the first to include a map of the area's public transport system. This very cool Green Map's team was led by Scot Fletcher of Energy Conscious Design. Nearly three years of work went into this map, with great results from a collaboration with graphic designer Andy Pettner, an active advisory council, and key organizations, including the Liverpool Architecture & Design Trust, Merseytravel and the city's tourism council. Mapmakers will find reading Liverpool's Initial Plan of interest, too. Plans for the next edition are gradually taking shape.

Malmö - SWEDEN

The Malmö Green Map is a guide to natural resources and sustainable solutions for life in this Swedish city. The map shows the way to hundreds of environmentally significant places in Malmö and the surrounding area. Malmö Green Map beganas a project under Malmö's environmental campaign 1997, The Green Thread. The second updated and refined edition was released 1999. The map shows the city on one side, and the region on the other. It is color coded for Swedish and English readers, and explains local customs, such as Allemansrätten, which provides the public with legal access to privately owned land in open country.

In 2001 the Malmö Green Map project has developed further under the name Your Green Guide to Malmö. It is part of an environmental communication project financed with support from the Swedish government under the City of Malmö's Local Investment Programme for sustainable development.

A special Green Map for the European Housing Expo Bo01, was published in the international magazine Sustainable Building in April 2001. This map was then developed further and was launched on June 27th in a printed Swedish and English version. The map can be viewed on the website www.greenguide.nu, together with other information on the Malmö project. In May 2002, new maps were added on the themes of food and cycling.

The Green Map of Malmö 2001 was first published in the Agenda 21 newspaper Green City as a centerfold in the June 13 edition. 45.000 copies were printed. The purpose of this version was to get feedback for the final edition. The newly redesigned map focused on the city of Malmö, with more info on the green points listed. Check out developments on www.greenguide.nu. The project is led by eco-architect Tor Fossum. Fia Niemi and Julia Gradin did research and updating of information. Malmö's first youth map covered the Ecocity Agustenborg area, with a group of 6 youths leading the work with the help of younger kids (www.ekostaden.com).

In Year 2000, many members of our Green Map network converged in Malmö for our first European Regional Meeting -- see pictures of this meeting and our exhibit at the Stockholm Challenge (an information technology for society prize, where Green Map System was a finalist) on the Events page. We also had an exhibit at the Malmö Library. Thanks again to Tor for his great hosting and organizing skills!

Province of Noord-Brabant - THE NETHERLANDS

In Holland, September 19, 1999 was declared the first National Car-Free Day and the Province of Noord-Brabant made it Cycling Day, too. That is when the Province-wide "Groene fietskaart van Brabant" -- the Green Cycling Map -- made its appearance. This colorful map features photographs and in-depth text. It covers 25 municipalities, and was produced by the Municipality of Breda, Dienst Stadsbeheer. Simultaneously, a Gardens Green Map was produced, showing the province's best. A special event and environmental education market was held on September 19 in Breda. The Green Cycling Map was available at tourist information offices, libraries, town halls and environmental education centres throughout the province, but all 25,000 copies were claimed in just one month, so planning on the next edition soon began! The project organizer Renate Foks worked with designer Ad Vermeulen and project manager Wieke Bonthuis. Renate is also the Green Mapmaker of Eindhoven, and that Map made its debut on World Environment Day 2000 (June 5). The Breda Green Map was reprinted in 2003.

More about these projects is at greenmap.nl

Breda - THE NETHERLANDS

The Breda Green Map (Groene Kaart Breda) was published in June 2002. This Green Map aims to enhance environmentally sound practices and also give information on eco/agro tourism close to the city. The map was published by the Department of Environmental Education of the City of Breda and several city departments sponsored the map. Green Mapmaker Renate Foks made this map with a team of city ecologists, city educators and JENN design. Cartography was done by Buijten en Schipperheijn, known for its national cycling maps.

Breda is continuing to use Green Mapmaking as a way to educate people about environmental issues. As a result, in 2002 and 2003, youth Green Maps were made of the Heuvel neighbourhood in Breda as part of an urban renewal project. And this youth project, called Trommelteam Keysermolen, continued to expand to other neigbourhoods in 2003 and 2004 (read more in the youth section).
